Annual Survey of Industries (ASI)

The Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) is a crucial source of industrial statistics in India. It plays a vital role in providing comprehensive data that helps in the assessment and evaluation of the organized manufacturing sector’s growth, composition, and structure. The survey covers a wide range of activities, including manufacturing processes, repair services, gas and water supply, and cold storage.

Key Points about ASI:

  • Factories under the Factories Act, 1948: ASI includes all factories registered under sections 2m (i) and 2m (ii) of the Factories Act, 1948. These sections pertain to factories employing 10 or more workers with power and 20 or more workers without power.
  • Beedi and Cigar Manufacturing: The survey also covers Beedi and Cigar manufacturing establishments registered under the Beedi and Cigar Workers (Condition of Employment) Act, 1966. This includes establishments employing 10 or more workers using power facilities and 20 or more workers without power facilities.
  • Large Units: ASI also includes units with 100 or more employees that are registered under any of the other seven acts specified under the Factories Act.
