- To address the issues of illegal occupation and transfer of assigned lands, the Government Assigned Lands (Prohibition of Transfers) Act, 1977 was enacted. This act empowered the government to reclaim illegally occupied assigned lands and ensure they remained with the intended beneficiaries. It also stipulated that, in the event of the original assignee’s death, the land could be reassigned to the heirs if they were deemed poor.
