Palem Vagu Project: This is a medium irrigation project across Palemvagu stream, a major tributary of river Godavari. It is located near Mallapuram village, Venkatapuram mandal of Jayashankar Bhupalpalli district. It provides irrigation facilities to 4,100 hectares (10,132 acres) kharif wet and 1250 hectares Rabi ayacut and drinking water supply.

Q. Give an account of the major and medium irrigation projects of Telangana on Godavari basin.

Introduction As Godavari and Krishna rivers are the major sources of water, the Telangana government has planned for speedy completion of ongoing projects including modernisation of old projects i.e. Nagarjuna Sagar, Nizam Sagar and Sri Ram sagar.
Body Projects under Godavari River Basin:

Major projects (Ayacut above 25000 Acres (10,000 ha)

1.      Kaleshwaram Project: The present Kalsehwaram project was reengnieeered and redesigned form of earlier Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Pranahita-Chevella Sujala Sravanthi project, which was proposed to utilize 160 TMC of allocated water of Godavari basin as per Godavari Water Dispute Tribunal award.

A barrage at Tummidihetti was planned to divert 160 TMC of water to irrigate 16.40 lakh acres in erstwhile Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Medak, Warangal, Nalgonda and Rangareddy districts. Further, it was proposed to provide 10 TMC to cater the drinking water needs of en route villages, 30TMC of drinking water to twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad and 16 TMC for Induatrial use.

2.      The Nizamsagar project was constructed by the Erstwhile Nizam Government during 1923 to 1931 across Manjira river with a storage capacity of 29.72 TMC to irrigate 2,75,000 Acres with a utilizable yield of 58 TMC. This is the first reservoir on Manjira River constructed with a dependable yield of 113.71 TMC.

3.      Sri Rama Sagar Project (SRSP) Reservoir is located across the Godavari River near Pochampad (v) in Nizamabad District is a Multipurpose Irrigation Project.

4.      Ali Sagar Lift irrigation Scheme: this scheme is intended to supplement irrigation facilities to the gap ayacut to the Nizam sagar project in some mandals of Nizamabad district. The scheme proposes to lift 720 cusecs of water from right bank of Godavari River near Kosli village.

5.      Argula Rajaram Guthpa Lift irrigation Scheme: to supplement the irrigation facilities to the gap ayacut of the Nizam sagar project.

6.      Mogaligundla Baga Reddy Singur project: was constructed across Manjeera River, a tributary to river Godavari with a gross capacity of 29.91 thousand million cubic feet (TMC). This project is situated near Singur(Village),Pulkal (Mandal), Sangareddy (Dist)

Medium projects (Ayacut above 5000 Acres (2000 ha) & upto 25000 Acres ( 10000 ha.)

1.      Choutpally Hanmanth Reddy Lift Irrigation Scheme: This scheme is proposed on the Shetpally tank, which is fed by distributary of Sri Ram sagar project- Laxmi canal. Its aim is to provide irrigation facility to 18 villages of Kammarpally and Morthad mandals of Nizamabad district.

2.      Lendi Interstate Project: This is an Inter State Major Irrigation project of Telangana and Maharashtra States, Head works are located at Gonegoan (V) Mukhed (Tq), Nanded District of Maharashtra State.

This project is to be shared in the ratio of 38:62 by Telangana and Maharastra states respectively.

3.      Palem vagu prject : This project is a medium Irrigation Project across Palemvagu stream, a major tributory of river Godavari. It is located near Mallapuram village, Venkatapuram Mandal, of Bhupalpally District. It provides irrigation facilities to 4100 Ha. (10132 Acres ) Khariff wet and 1250 Ha (3089 Acres) ID Rabi Ayacut and drinking water supply

4.      Sri Komaram Bheem Project: is a Medium Irrigation Project proposed across Peddavagu stream near Ada (V), Asifabad (M), Asifabad (Dist). The scheme is proposed to irrigate an ayacut of (18421 Ha) 45,500 Acres covering in 69 villages in 4 Mandals i.e Asifabad, Wankidi, Kagaznagar and Sirpur (T) of Asifabad District.

Conclusion Telangana is marching ahead in irrigation front, particularly, after formation of the state. The government has taken keen interest in completing the existing projects initiated in undivided Andhra Pradesh and re-engineered and re-designed some of the major irrigation projects. Minor and micro irrigation projects including Mission Kakatiya were taken up with high priority by the government.
