Factors Influencing Industrial Development

Impact of Natural Resources:

  • The concentration of mineral and forest resources in Telangana dictated the type of industries that developed. However, the industrial potential in these areas was not fully realized due to various constraints.

Regional Inequalities:

  • The IDBI survey in 1974 highlighted regional inequalities and the related political environment as significant factors that constrained industrial development in Telangana. These disparities were a result of both economic policies and the political prioritization of certain regions over others.

Investment Disparities:

  • The expenditure on industries and mines during the Second and Third Five-Year Plans (1956-61 and 1961-66) shows a clear disparity between Andhra and Telangana. During the Second Five-Year Plan, Andhra received Rs. 133.45 lakhs, while Telangana received only Rs. 20.04 lakhs. In the Third Five-Year Plan, Andhra’s share was Rs. 405.61 lakhs compared to Telangana’s Rs. 175.98 lakhs. These figures reveal that Telangana’s industrial sector was not given adequate attention in terms of planned investment, which hampered its growth potential.

Industrial Growth Rates:

  • Despite the overall decline in industrial growth and investment in Telangana during the united Andhra Pradesh period, the region still contributed significantly to the state’s industrial sector. It accounted for two-thirds of the total industrial growth in the state, demonstrating its inherent industrial strength. However, the lack of balanced regional development and the focus on other areas led to missed opportunities for further industrial expansion in Telangana.
