  • First five year Plan of India (1951- 56) gave highest priority and allocations to agriculture and irrigation. The Central Water Commission was established in 1945.
  • Central Water Commission is a premier technical organization of India in the field of water resources. The National Institute of Hydrology was established in 1979. Its headquarter is located at Roorkee (Odisha).
  • In 1985, the Department of Irrigation was re-constituted as the ‘Ministry of Water Resources’.
  • The National Water Board was founded in 1990.
  • A revised ‘National Water Policy’ was adopted in 2002.
  • On 4 November 2008, River Ganga was declared as the National River.
  • Water resources are very crucial for sustainable agriculture.
  • Entire Telangana state is located in the basins of two important rivers in India namely Godavari and Krishna. Irrigation in Telangana (2015-16)
