Major Mountain Ranges

Karakoram Range:

  • Valley of Kashmir:Nestled between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal Range, the valley is to the famous Dal Lake (a freshwater lake) known for its houseboats and shikara rides.
  • Wular Lake:Located at North of Srinagar, it is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia, it is vital in managing the flow of the Jhelum River.
  • Pangong Tso:Located in the spans the India-China border, it is a high-altitude saltwater lake.
  • Tso Moriri:Located in the Ladakh region, It is A high-altitude saltwater lake surrounded by mountain peaks.

Glaciers

  • Khardung La: Located on the Ladakh Range, it is a high-altitude pass and is crucial for trade and travel between Ladakh and the rest of India.

River Systems

  • Karewa Formations:Found in the Kashmir Valley, These are sedimentary deposits useful for agriculture, particularly for growing Zafran (saffron), a valuable spice.
  • Longitudinal Valleys (Duns):These valleys are characterized by their elongated, low-lying terrain, differing from the surrounding mountainous landscape.Examples: Jammu Dun and Pathankot Dun.
