Course:

  • In Tibet: Known as “SingiKhamban” or “Lion’s Mouth”
  • In India: Enters Ladakh (Leh) and forms a picturesque gorge
  • Himalayan Tributaries: Shyok, Gilgit, Zaskar, Hunza, Nubra
  • Major Region: Flows through Baltistan and Gilgit
  • Emergence from Mountains: Attock, where it receives the Kabul River on its right bank
  • Flow Through Pakistan:
    • Flows southwards to Panjnad near Mithankot
    • Panjnad River: Confluence of the Satluj, Beas, Ravi, Chenab, and Jhelum
    • Final Destination: Arabian Sea

Main Tributaries of Indus River

Satluj
  • Origin:“Rakastal” near Mansarovar in Tibet.
  • This is an antecedent river called LangechenKhambab in Tibet.
  • Course:The river flows nearly parallel to the Indus for approximately 400 km before crossing into India. It enters through the Shipki La pass in the Himalayas and flows into the Punjab plains. The river meets the Beas at Hari-ke-Patan in Amritsar, Punjab, and after their confluence, the combined flow enters Pakistan.
  • It feeds the canal system of the Bhakra Nangal project.
Beas
  • Origin: Beas Kund near Rohtang Pass (Himachal Pradesh).
  • Course:It flows through the Kullu valley (Himachal Pradesh) and forms gorges at Kati and Largi in the Dhauladharrange.It flows into the Punjab plains, where it merges with the Satluj near Harike in Punjab.
  • The Beas river flows exclusively within India.
Ravi
  • Origin:West of Rohtang Pass, Killu Hills (Himachal Pradesh).
  • Course:It flows through the Chamba valley (Himachal Pradesh) of the state.The river drains the region between the southeastern part of the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges. It enters the Punjab plains and flows along the Indo-Pakistan border for a short distance before crossing into Pakistan, where it merges with the Chenab river near Sarai Sidhu.
Chenab
  • Origin:Baralacha Pass (Himachal Pradesh).
  • It is formed by two streams – the Chandra and the Bhaga which meet at Tandi near Keylong in Himachal Pradesh. It is also known as Chandrabhaga.
  • It is the largest tributary of the Indus and flows for about 1180 km before entering into Pakistan.
Jhelum
  • Origin:Spring at Verinag, in the south-eastern part of Kashmir valley, at the foothills of Pir Panjal.
  • Course:The river flows through Srinagar, passes into Wular Lake, and then enters Pakistan via a deep, narrow gorge.At Jhang (Pakistan) it joins Chenab.

Major right bank tributaries include the Nubra River (the main tributary of the Shyok River), Shyok River, Gilgit River, Hunza River, Kabul River, Khurram River, Gomal River, Viboa River, Tochi River, and Sangar River.

Left bank tributaries

The left bank tributaries consist of the Zanskar River, Suru River, Kishanganga (Neelam) River, Jhelum River, Chenab River, Ravi River, Beas River, Satluj River, and Panjnad River.

Indus Water Treaty (IWT)

Overview:

  • Date Signed: September 19, 1960
  • Signatories: India and Pakistan
  • Purpose: To address and manage the allocation of water from the Indus River System between the two countries.

Context:

  • The treaty was established in the aftermath of the 1947 Partition, which had raised concerns about the equitable sharing of the Indus River System’s waters.
  • It was brokered by the World Bank to help resolve disputes over water usage and to foster cooperation between India and Pakistan.

Key Provisions:

Division of Rivers:

  • Eastern Rivers: Satluj, Beas, Ravi
  • Western Rivers: Chenab, Jhelum, Indus

Water Allocation:

  • India: Granted rights to the waters of the eastern rivers (Satluj, Beas, and Ravi).
  • Pakistan: Granted rights to the waters of the western rivers (Chenab, Jhelum, and Indus).

Water Usage:

  • India can use the waters of the eastern rivers for irrigation, power generation, and other purposes, with certain restrictions on storage and diversion.
  • Pakistan has the right to use the waters of the western rivers for irrigation, agriculture, and other uses.
