Immunization Programs in India

Vaccination represents one of the most significant public health achievements in human history. It is the practical, large-scale application of artificial active immunity. By deliberately introducing a harmless form of a pathogen into a population, governments can prevent massive disease outbreaks, reduce child mortality, and even eradicate diseases entirely (as seen with Smallpox and Polio).

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare manages immunization in India through the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP), which provides free vaccines against several life-threatening diseases. Two of the most significant milestones in India’s recent immunization history are Mission Indradhanush and the COVID-19 vaccination drive.
