Fats (Lipids)
Fats provide a highly concentrated source of energy, yielding more than double the energy per gram compared to carbohydrates.
Functions:
- Besides providing stored energy, fats are necessary for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (Vitamins A, D, E, and K).
- They form a protective layer under the skin to insulate the body and regulate temperature, and they act as a cushion to protect vital internal organs from physical shock.
Sources:
- Healthy fats are found in vegetable oils (like mustard oil, groundnut oil, and sunflower oil), butter, ghee, nuts, and oilseeds.
Health Impact
- While fats are essential, excessive consumption, particularly of saturated fats and trans-fats, can lead to obesity and an increase in blood cholesterol levels, raising the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
