Department of Atomic Energy (DAE)
The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) was established on August 3, 1954, through a Presidential Order. It operates directly under the charge of the Prime Minister of India. As research in the peaceful uses of atomic energy grew rapidly, the government realized the need for a strong planning body. Therefore, the Atomic Energy Commission was set up on March 1, 1958. This commission was given full executive and financial powers to formulate the policies of the DAE.
Core Objectives and Mandate
The main responsibility of the DAE is to develop and manage both power and non-power applications of atomic energy in the country.
- Nuclear Power Generation: The department is responsible for the complete cycle of nuclear power. This includes exploring and processing uranium resources, fabricating nuclear fuel, producing heavy water, and safely constructing and operating nuclear power plants.
- Waste Management: It handles the complex process of nuclear fuel reprocessing and the safe management of radioactive waste.
- Advanced Scientific Research: The DAE conducts high-level research in advanced fields such as fast breeder reactors, nuclear fusion, accelerator and laser technology, materials science, and biological sciences.
Peaceful and Societal Applications
Beyond generating electricity, the DAE uses radiation and isotope technology for the everyday benefit of society.
- Healthcare: It develops radiation technologies and isotopes used in the diagnosis and treatment of major diseases, particularly cancer.
- Agriculture: It develops advanced, high-yielding crop and seed varieties.
- Food Security: It uses radiation techniques for safe food preservation, increasing the shelf life of agricultural products.
- Environment and Civic Needs: The department develops spin-off technologies to provide clean drinking water and manage urban waste efficiently.

- Industrial Organizations: It manages three industrial bodies, such as the Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) in Hyderabad and the Heavy Water Board (HWB) in Mumbai.
- Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs): It runs five government-owned companies, notably the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL).
- Service Organizations: Three dedicated organizations manage services like purchasing and estate management.
- Aided Institutes and Boards: The department provides grants to eleven reputed national institutes (like the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research) to encourage basic science and cancer research. It also runs two boards to fund external research in nuclear fields and mathematics.
The Department of Atomic Energy plays a vital role in making the nation self-reliant in advanced technology.
