Department of Biotechnology
The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) was established in 1986 under the Ministry of Science and Technology. Recognizing the immense potential of biotechnology for national development, it was created to provide a dedicated push to this emerging field.
Core Focus and Institutes:
Since its foundation, the DBT has focused on three main goals:
- training a skilled scientific workforce,
- building modern laboratory infrastructure, and
- promoting advanced research.
It funds and manages several premier autonomous institutes across the country, such as the National Institute of Immunology and the National Centre for Cell Science. The department directs its scientific research to address major social needs, particularly in healthcare, food and agriculture, clean energy, and environmental security.
