Antrix Corporation Limited
Antrix Corporation Limited is the first commercial and marketing arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Before the recent space sector reforms, it served as the primary agency responsible for promoting and commercially exploiting the space products, technical consultancy services, and technologies developed by ISRO.
1) Origin and Administrative Status
- It was incorporated as a private limited company in September 1992.
- It is wholly owned by the Government of India and operates under the administrative control of the Department of Space (DoS).
- In 2008, the government awarded it the status of a ‘Miniratna’ Category-I Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) due to its consistent financial performance and global reach.
2) Primary Mandate
Historically, the agency handled several crucial commercial activities for the Indian space programme:
- Launch Services: It facilitated the launch of foreign satellites aboard Indian rockets, primarily the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). This generated significant foreign exchange for the country.
- Space Assets: It managed the leasing of transponders on Indian communication satellites (INSAT and GSAT series) to various domestic and international media and telecommunication providers.
- Earth Observation Data: It was responsible for marketing and selling valuable data generated by India’s remote sensing satellites to global customers for agricultural, environmental, and urban planning uses.
- Technology Transfer: It transferred spin-off technologies, which were originally developed during complex space research, to Indian industries for commercial manufacturing and public use.
3) Transition in the Contemporary Era
While the corporation played a foundational role in establishing India’s footprint in the global commercial space market, its function has shifted in recent years. With the creation of NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) in 2019, many of the traditional commercial duties, such as manufacturing launch vehicles through industry consortiums and marketing space-based services, have been transferred to NSIL. Today, NSIL acts as the primary commercial arm, while the older corporation largely handles legacy contracts and specific ongoing commercial engagements.
