- In 1989, former Minister Koheda Prabhakar Reddy and Mechineni Kishan Rao co-founded the “Telangana Sangarshana Samithi” to advocate for the establishment of a separate Telangana state.
- Salauddin Owaisi, the head of the Majlis party, participated in the meetings held by this group.
- Notably, this was the only instance during Salauddin Owaisi’s lifetime when he supported the demand for a separate Telangana. Outside of this particular involvement, Owaisi consistently advocated for a united Andhra Pradesh.
Discrimination and Underdevelopment of Telangana Under Andhra Rule:
- During the governance of Andhra leaders, the Telangana region faced widespread discrimination and neglect, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, irrigation, electricity, education, medical care, employment, and industry.
- The neglect of the irrigation sector was especially significant, forcing Telangana farmers to rely heavily on underground water sources for agriculture.
- The “States Re-organization Act” specified in sections 107 and 108(1) that all projects initiated before 1956 should be duly completed. However, Andhra leaders failed to complete any such projects in the Telangana region.
- As a result of these failures, hunger deaths, suicides, and migrations became commonplace in Telangana, leading to widespread discontent and intolerance among the population towards the Andhra leadership.
- The collective grievances and perceived injustices fuelled a growing readiness among the Telangana people to revive the movement for a separate state.
