During the Sangam period, Murugan, revered as the Tamil God, was the primary deity. His worship had ancient origins, with Sangam literature mentioning various festivals dedicated to him. Murugan was venerated at six sacred abodes known as Arupadai Veedu.
Other deities worshipped during the Sangam period included: Mayon (Vishnu): Another prominent deity associated with protection and preservation.
Vendan (Indiran): Worshipped as the god of rain and thunderstorms.
Varunan: The god of the sea, waters, and rain.
Korravai: A goddess associated with war and victory, often depicted as a fierce warrior goddess.
Additionally, the practice of Hero Stone or Nadu Kal worship was significant. These stones were erected in memory of warriors who displayed extraordinary bravery in battle, serving both as monuments and objects of veneration.
