Missile

A missile is a guided projectile designed to be launched or self-propelled toward a target, usually carrying an explosive payload. It can be powered by various means, including rockets or jet engines, and is guided during its flight to ensure accuracy in hitting its intended objective. Missiles are commonly used in military applications for purposes such as air defense, anti-ship warfare, and strategic bombardment.

Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP)

India started the IGMDP in 1983 to develop five missiles: Prithvi, Agni, Akash, Trishul and Nag for which the deadline was 1995.

Agni Missile

• Agni series of missiles constitute the backbone of India’s nuclear weapons delivery which also includes the Prithvi short range ballistic missiles and fighter aircraft.

• DRDO successfully flight-tests New Generation Ballistic Missile ‘Agni Prime’ off Odisha
• Agni-P is a two-stage canisterised solid propellant ballistic missile with dual redundant navigation and guidance system
• It has a range between 1000 to 2000 km and was tested for the first time in June 2021. It is lighter than all the earlier Agni series of missiles.

Prithvi-I

• The Prithvi-I is an Indian short-range ballistic missile with a range of 150 km. It is the first in a lineage of indigenous land and sea-based missiles which includes the Prithvi-II, the ship-launched Dhanush, and the Prithvi Air Defense interceptor. The Indian Army has withdrawn the Prithvi-I from service and replaced it with the Prahaar missile.

Prithvi-II

• The missile, which is powered by light propulsion twin engines, has a range of around 350 km and can carry 500-1,000 kg of warheads. It uses an advanced inertial navigation system to strike the set target.

Dhanush

AKASH

• AKASH is a Short Range Surface to Air Missile System to protect vulnerable areas and points from air attacks.
• Range of Operation: 4.5 km to 25 km
• Altitude of Operation: 100 m up to 20 km
• Fully automatic with quick response time from target detection to kill.

Akash-New Generation (Akash-NG)

• The Akash-NG is a short-range mobile surface-to-air missile system (SRSAM) with a range of up to 30 km. The system is designed and developed by the DRDO and manufactured by Pune-based Electropneumatics and Hydraulics (India) Pvt Ltd (EHPL).

NAG ATGM

NAG is a third generation Anti-Tank Guided Missile with Fire and Forget top attack capability.
