Military Administration of the Mauryan Empire

  • The Mauryan military was a well-organized force under the command of a ‘Senapati’ (Commander-in-Chief). To manage military affairs effectively, a Board of 30 members was established. This board was divided into six committees, each responsible for different wings of the military. These committees ensured the smooth functioning and coordination of their respective military divisions.

Military Committees and Their Responsibilities:

  1. Navy: Managed maritime forces and naval operations.
  2. Transport and Supply: Handled logistics, including the transport of troops and the supply of provisions and equipment.
  3. Infantry: Oversaw the foot soldiers.
    • Headed by Padadhyaksha (Superintendent of Infantry).
  4. Cavalry: Supervised the horse-mounted troops.
    • Headed by Asvadhyaksha (Superintendent of Cavalry).
  5. War Chariots: Managed the chariot units.
    • Headed by Rathadhyaksha (Superintendent of War Chariots).
  6. War Elephants: Controlled the elephant corps.
    • Headed by Hastyadhyaksha (Superintendent of War Elephants).
  • Each of these military wings was overseen by an ‘Adhyaksha’ or Superintendent, ensuring specialized attention and management for each division, thereby maintaining the strength and efficiency of the Mauryan army.
