- A comparison with last year’s reported crimes in Telangana shows a 35 percent increase in the total number of crimes against children (from 4,200 in 2020). The number of victims child marriage decreased by 8 percent (from 62 in 2020 to 57 in 2021) as compared to the national average of 34 percent increase (from 792 victims in 2020).
- During the last 3 years, there has been a continuous increase in victims of child marriage in Telangana, from 35 in 2019 to 57 in 2021 (Figure-1).
- As against a 3.5 percentage point decrease in women aged 20-24 years falling prey to child marriage between 2015-16 and 2019-21 (from 26.8% to 23.3%) in India, the comparative decrease in Telangana is at 2.7 percent (from 26.2% to 23.5%) during the same period.
- As per the Census 2011, in Telangana, 2.8 lakh children were married off before the attainment of the legal age of marriage, which constituted approximately 2 percent of all married children in the country. However, NCRB data suggests that cases of only 154 children were registered in the state under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act during 2019-21.
- Telangana has eight districts with notable rates of child marriage: Khammam, Hyderabad, Kamareddy, Mahabubabad, Medak, Nagarkurnool, Sangareddy, and Wanaparthy.
- The implementation of the Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak schemes in Telangana has significantly reduced the occurrence of child marriages. Under these schemes, girls who reach the age of 18 and whose parents’ annual income is up to ₹2 lakh receive ₹1,00,116 for their marriage.
- Of the Kalyana Lakshmi beneficiaries, 2,23,096 belonged to SC communities, 1,36,567 to ST communities, 4,94,353 to BC communities and 50,518 to EBC sections.
