- The term “child labour” is often defined as work. That deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity. It is harmful to the physical and mental development of children. It also refers to work that:
- is mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful to children; and
- interferes with their schooling by:
- depriving them of the opportunity to attend school
- obliging them to leave school prematurely; or
- requiring them to attempt to combine school attendance with excessively long and heavy work.
Definition :- According to the Census of India definition a child worker is one who works for the major part of the day and is below the age of 14 years. There is no agreement about the definition of the ‘child’. The 1989 UN Convention on the ‘Rights of the Child’ sets the upper age at 18. The International Labour Organisation refers to children as those who are under 15 years. In India children above the age of 14 years are old enough to be employed.
Child labor remains a concerning issue in Telangana, reflecting a complex interplay of socio-economic factors, inadequate enforcement of laws, and challenges in ensuring access to education.
