Economic Reforms and Post-Reform Period:
- The economic liberalization of the 1990s brought significant changes. Telangana, particularly Hyderabad, benefited from the IT boom, transforming into a major IT hub.
- Despite the growth in certain sectors, disparities persisted, leading to feelings of neglect and uneven development between Telangana and the coastal Andhra region.
- This period also saw the rise of the Telangana movement, driven by the perception of economic injustice and the demand for a separate state.
Sectoral Composition of Income:
- In the early years, the sectoral composition of income reflected Telangana’s relatively diversified economy:
- Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Fishing: Telangana’s share was 37.4%, compared to Andhra’s 59%.
Mining and Manufacturing: Telangana had a higher share at 24%, compared to Andhra’s 19%.
- Tertiary Sector: Telangana again led with 38.6%, while Andhra had 22%.
The economic conditions in the Telangana region during the period of united Andhra Pradesh (1956-2014) reflect a complex interplay of growth, regional imbalance, and underinvestment. Despite some increases in agricultural inputs and infrastructure, the region continued to experience significant disparities compared to Andhra, which contributed to the sense of neglect and the demand for a separate state.
