The Sociable Lapwing is a winter migrant to India that has experienced a steep and sudden population decline, earning it the status of a critically endangered species.

Habitat

  • It typically inhabits fallow agricultural fields and scrub desert landscapes.

Distribution

The bird is native to Central Asia, Asia Minor, Russia, Egypt, India,   and Pakistan. Within India, its presence is limited mainly to the northern and northwestern regions.

Threats

  • The species faces threats such as the conversion of its habitat into arable land, illegal hunting, and disturbance due to proximity to human settlements.
