The Pygmy Hog is the smallest wild pig species in the world and serves as a key indicator of healthy grassland ecosystems. These pigs typically form social groups of up to 20 individuals, led by a dominant female (matriarch).

An extremely rare parasite, the pygmy hog-sucking louse, which exclusively depends on the pygmy hog, is also critically endangered.

Habitat and Distribution

  • Pygmy hogs inhabit dense, tall, riverine grasslands. Presently, their population is confined to the Manas Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam. Historically, they were distributed across northern India, Nepal, and Bhutan.

Threats to Survival

The species faces serious threats due to:

  • Habitat destruction, especially from grassland conversion for agriculture.
  • Hunting and poaching, which have severely reduced its population.

Conservation Status

  • IUCN Red List: Endangered (EN)
  • CITES: Appendix I
  • Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972: Schedule I

Pygmy Hog Conservation Programme (PHCP)

  • Launched in 1996, the PHCP is a joint initiative involving the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), IUCN, and local NGOs like EcoSystems India and Aaranyak.

Key activities include:

  • Maintaining captive breeding populations
  • Reintroducing pygmy hogs into secure grassland habitats of Assam

Why Pygmy Hog Conservation Matters

Pygmy hogs are critical indicator species, meaning their presence (or absence) reveals the overall health of their habitat. These high grasslands also support other threatened species
