IUCN Classification of Conservation Priority
Extinct (EX)
- A species is declared Extinct when there is no reasonable doubt that the last individual has died. This is concluded after extensive surveys across all known or expected habitats, at appropriate times (daily, seasonal, annual), within the species’ historical range.
Extinct in the Wild (EW)
- A species is considered Extinct in the Wild if it survives only in captivity, in cultivation, or in populations outside its natural range. Surveys in native habitats must yield no evidence of individuals.
Critically Endangered (CR)
This is the highest risk category for species that are still in the wild. A species is Critically Endangered when:
- There is a population reduction of more than 90% in the last 10 years.
- Fewer than 50 mature individuals remain.
- A quantitative analysis predicts a ≥50% chance of extinction within the next 10 years.
Endangered (EN)
A species is categorized as Endangered when:
- It has suffered a population decline of over 70% in the last 10 years.
- The population has fewer than 250 mature individuals.
- There is a ≥20% chance of extinction in the wild in the next 20 years.
Vulnerable (VU)
A species is considered Vulnerable when:
- There is a population decline of over 50% over 10 years.
- Fewer than 10,000 mature individuals exist.
- It has a ≥10% chance of extinction within 100 years.
Near Threatened (NT)
- A species is Near Threatened when it does not yet meet the criteria for the threatened categories but is close to qualifying or is likely to qualify in the near future.
Least Concern (LC)
- Species that are widespread and abundant fall under the Least Concern category. These species do not face an immediate threat of extinction.
Data Deficient (DD)
- Species are categorized as Data Deficient when insufficient information is available to assess their risk of extinction. This category does not imply low risk, but highlights the need for more research.
Not Evaluated (NE)
- Species that have not been assessed against the IUCN criteria are placed in the Not Evaluated category.
