  • The Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Amendment Rules, 2019 introduced stricter controls on waste imports and streamlined processes for managing hazardous and recyclable wastes. Import of solid plastic waste was prohibited, including imports into Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and Export Oriented Units (EOUs), in order to curb environmental damage.
  • Exporters of silk waste were exempted from needing prior permission from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Similarly, defective electrical and electronic assemblies manufactured and exported from India can now be imported back within one year without seeking fresh permissions. Industries that do not require consent under the Water Act (1974) and Air Act (1981) are also exempted from authorization under these rules, provided their hazardous wastes are handed over to authorized handlers.
