International Measures

  1. Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), 1992:
    • The CBD recognizes invasive alien species as a major threat to global biodiversity. It calls upon member nations to prevent their introduction, and where necessary, control or eradicate them to safeguard ecosystems and native species.
  1. Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), 2022:
    • Adopted under the UN CBD, the KMGBF sets a global target to reduce the rate of introduction and establishment of invasive alien species by at least 50% by 2030, emphasizing both prevention and sustainable ecosystem management.
  1. Global Invasive Species Programme (GISP) :
    • An international initiative that promotes scientific research, capacity building, and the development of management strategies for dealing with invasive species at a global scale.
  1. Invasive Species Specialist Group (ISSG) :
    • A network of global experts under the IUCN’s Species Survival Commission, the ISSG provides policy advice, research, and technical expertise on IAS prevention and control.
  1. International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) :
    • A multilateral treaty focused on protecting global agriculture and natural ecosystems by preventing the introduction and spread of plant pests, including invasive species.
  1. Regional Efforts (e.g. European Union’s Regulation on Invasive Alien Species) :
    • Regional frameworks like the EU Regulation aim to create coordinated responses within their territories to monitor, control, and eliminate invasive species, complementing global efforts.
