INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES (ICT)

Fundamentals of ICT and the Internet

ICT includes all the tools and technologies that help people share, access, and use information. This can involve using computers, the internet, and other devices to communicate, learn, and solve problems. So, when you’re using a computer, tablet, or your phone to do things like play games, learn online, or send messages, you’re using ICT!

  • Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are a broader term for Information Technology (IT), which refers to all communication technologies, including the internet, wireless networks, cell phones, computers, software, middleware, video-conferencing, social networking, and other media applications and services enabling users to access, retrieve, store, transmit, and manipulate information in a digital form.
  • ICTs are also used to refer to the convergence of media technology such as audio-visual and telephone networks with computer networks, by means of a unified system of cabling (including signal distribution and management) or link system. However, there is no universally accepted definition of ICTs considering that the concepts, methods and tools involved in ICTs are steadily evolving on an almost daily basis.

Key Components of ICT

  • A complete ICT system is made up of several interacting parts:

    • Hardware: The physical devices you can touch, such as computers, smartphones, servers, and routers.
    • Software: The digital programs and applications that give instructions to the hardware, such as operating systems, web browsers, and word processors.
    • Networks: The communication pathways that link devices together, allowing them to share data. This includes local Wi-Fi, cellular networks, and the global internet.
    • Data: The raw information, numbers, text, images, and videos that are processed and transmitted through the system.
    • People: The users who interact with the technology, as well as the professionals who design and maintain it.
