Emerging Technologies
Emerging Technologies refer to new and rapidly advancing technological innovations that are expected to significantly alter the business and social environment within the next five to ten years. Unlike traditional IT tools that mainly process and store data, these technologies possess the ability to learn, adapt, and physically interact with the real world.
Together, these technologies form the backbone of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0). This revolution is characterized by the blurring of boundaries between the physical, digital, and biological spheres.
Key Characteristics
- Disruptive Nature: They fundamentally disrupt existing traditional industries, rendering older technologies obsolete.
- Convergence: Modern emerging technologies do not operate in isolation. They combine and amplify each other (e.g., Artificial Intelligence processing data collected by the Internet of Things).
- High Growth Potential: They offer massive economic opportunities but also present new regulatory, ethical, and cybersecurity challenges.
Relevance to India and Governance
For a developing nation like India, emerging technologies offer a unique opportunity for technological leapfrogging—skipping inferior, older technologies and moving directly to advanced systems.
The Government of India actively promotes these technologies to achieve the vision of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047. They are critically important for:
- Precision Agriculture: Using sensors and AI to increase crop yields.
- Targeted Welfare: Using blockchain for leak-proof Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT).
- Smart Infrastructure: Managing energy and traffic in smart cities using the Internet of Things (IoT).
- National Security: Utilizing AI and Quantum Computing for advanced defence and cybersecurity systems.
