Mains Previous Year Questions

Q.1) How is S-400 air defence system technically superior to any other system presently available in the world? (2021)

Introduction

The S-400 Triumf, developed by Russia’s Almaz Central Design Bureau, is considered the world’s most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) defence system. It can neutralize a wide spectrum of aerial threats including aircraft, UAVs, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. India signed a $5.43 billion deal in 2018 for five regiments of S-400, making it a critical pillar of its air defence architecture.

Body

Technical Superiority of S-400

  1. Multi-layered Air Defence Capability

o   Can engage targets at four different ranges simultaneously (40 km, 120 km, 250 km, and 400 km).

o   Provides a comprehensive shield against multiple threat levels.

  1. Long Range & Altitude Coverage

o   Detects targets up to 600 km away.

o   Capable of striking aerial targets at 400 km range and up to 30 km altitude, covering both low-flying and high-altitude threats.

  1. Multi-target Engagement

o   Each S-400 battery can track 100+ targets simultaneously.

o   Can engage 36 targets at once using up to 72 missiles, ensuring saturation attack resilience.

  1. Advanced Radar Systems

o   Equipped with 3D phased array radars and command & control systems.

o   Detects even stealth aircraft (e.g., F-35) and low radar cross-section targets.

  1. Versatility of Missiles

o   Compatible with multiple missile types (40N6, 48N6, 9M96E, etc.), each optimized for different ranges and speeds.

o   Capable of intercepting ballistic missiles travelling at speeds of 4.8 km/sec.

  1. Mobility and Deployment

o   Mounted on highly mobile trucks, enabling rapid deployment and repositioning.

o   Each launcher can be set up in under 10 minutes.

  1. Integration with Defence Networks

o   Can be integrated with other radar and missile defence systems.

o   Enhances layered air defence architecture of the host nation.

Comparison with Other Systems

  • Patriot PAC-3 (USA): Effective against ballistic missiles but has shorter range (~160 km) compared to S-400’s 400 km.
  • THAAD (USA): Specializes in ballistic missile interception but not versatile against all aerial threats.
  • Iron Dome (Israel): Effective for short-range threats but limited against long-range missiles and stealth aircraft.
  • S-400 Advantage: Offers longer range, multi-target tracking, superior radar, and ability to intercept multiple types of aerial threats in a single integrated system.

Conclusion

The S-400 Triumf is technically superior due to its range, versatility, radar sophistication, and multi-layered defence capability, making it unmatched globally. For India, its deployment enhances strategic deterrence, counter-balances adversaries’ air power, and provides a credible shield against evolving threats, strengthening national security.
