Telangana, with its rich Deccani culture, has historically been renowned for its diverse arts, handicrafts, and textiles, flourishing under royal patronage during the era of dynastic rule.

  • The decline of handicrafts in the 19th and 20th centuries globally, and particularly in Telangana, can largely be attributed to the rise of industrialization. This period saw traditional crafts overshadowed by the advancement of new industries. Additionally, exploitation by the East India Company, which purchased handicrafts at unfairly low prices, severely impacted local craftsmen.

The industrial policies of the time also played a role, pushing the textile industry into crisis and leaving its workers impoverished.

Despite the significant mental and physical effort required, many artisans, working as family units, struggled to earn a livelihood, with the income generated insufficient even for basic sustenance.
