Classification of Ecosystems

Ecosystems can be broadly classified into two main types:

  1. Terrestrial Ecosystems — e.g., forests, grasslands, deserts.
  2. Aquatic Ecosystems — e.g., freshwater (rivers, lakes), saline water (estuaries), and marine (oceans, seas).

These ecosystems, their functioning, and their interconnections will be discussed in detail in the subsequent chapters.
