Crimes under the Indian Penal Code (IPC):

  1. Rape (Section 376 IPC):
    • Total cases: 24,206
    • Noteworthy trends: Increased by 9.2% in 2011 compared to the previous year.
    • Geographic insight: Madhya Pradesh reported the highest number of cases, and Mizoram had the highest crime rate.
  2. Kidnapping & Abduction (Sec. 363-373 IPC):
    • Total cases: 35,565
    • Increase: 19.4% in 2011.
    • Uttar Pradesh contributed the most cases, and Delhi reported the highest crime rate.
  3. Dowry Death (Sec.302, 304B IPC) and Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961:
    • Total cases: 8,391
    • Increase: 2.7% in 2011.
    • Uttar Pradesh and Bihar reported the highest number of cases, with Bihar having the highest crime rate.
  4. Torture (Cruelty by Husband & Relatives) (Sex.498-A IPC):
    • Total cases: 99,135
    • Increase: 5.4% in 2011.
    • West Bengal had the highest number of cases, and the state also reported the highest crime rate.
  5. Molestation (Sec.354 IPC):
    • Total cases: 42,968
    • Increase: 5.8% in 2011.
    • Madhya Pradesh reported the highest incidence, and Kerala had the highest crime rate.
  6. Sexual Harassment (Sec.509 IPC):
    • Total cases: 8,570
    • Decrease: 14.0% in 2011.
    • Andhra Pradesh reported the most cases, and the state also had the highest crime rate.
  7. Importation of Girls (Sec.366-B IPC):
    • Total cases: 80
    • Increase: 122.2% in 2011.
    • Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Karnataka together contributed to over two-thirds of total cases.

Crimes under the Special & Local Laws (SLL):

  1. Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956:
    • Total cases: 2,435
    • Decrease: 2.6% in 2011.
    • Andhra Pradesh reported the most cases, and Daman & Diu had the highest crime rate.
  2. Dowry Prohibition Act:
    • Total cases: 6,619
    • Increase: 27.7% in 2011.
    • Andhra Pradesh reported the highest number of cases, and Odisha had the highest crime rate.
  3. Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act:
    • Total cases: 453
    • Decrease: 49.4% in 2011.
    • Andhra Pradesh had the highest number of cases and also the highest crime rate.
  4. Sati Prevention Act, 1987:
    • Total cases: 1
